  1. Bob, I can’t comment on the cooling system yet, but my requirements for a system I am interested in and would actually use are very close to yours! I was going to add the links, but got lazy, the sponsors are linked on the sidebar though —>

Triumph was kind enough to respond multiple times to my proposals, but the bottom line is they do not have enough bikes here to lend me one or two. I really like the new Trophy, and rode the Explorer, it was excellent.

    Jim,
yes, I plan on banking hours when I can. I just hope my fiscal cliff doesn’t happen on day 49 of my attempt!
I have not approached KTM, not sure I’m interested in any of their models for the type and hours I plan to ride. 100,000 miles equals about 300 miles every day of the year. There will be many many days of 18 hours on the freeways and I’m not feeling the KTM would be suitable. Also dealer network is thin.

I’m not really good at riding with others when I’m “working”. I find riding with someone else can actually be more distracting and cause me more fatigue. My friends stopped riding with me many many years ago!
I’d rather worry about one bike than two!
But thanks for the ideas, lots to think about and appreciate all of the ideas!

  2. Love the coolshirt idea, but I would want it to also have a heating element sewn in, AND some sort of continuous cooling unit so that I don’t have to stop for ice. I think a small reservoir for anti-freeze and one of those semi-conductor cooling units (or a 12 volt condensing fridge unit) for cooling, and a standard wiring system for heating would be perfect. If it could be done in a practical manner, I would be willing to spend crazy money on it. I suppose you could just use a cool-vest with some sort of heating wires sewn into a mesh vest that is worn under it.

You need to add links to these sponsors, at least in the articles you are talking about. Coolshirt was not near the top of the list when I did a search.

Try Triumph. I bet they would love to advertise their Adventure model.

Love what you are doing, but please be careful. We all want you to complete your Million MS Miles

  3. RE:50/50 – The good thing about the 50K/50Day goal is that it’s not 50 back-to-back Saddlesores. You can “bank” miles when you’re feeling good and use the cushion when you’re too wiped to continue. The 1150 miles you did in 18 hours put you only in need of 850 more the next day to do 2K/2Days 🙂 Knowing that you’ve got a bank of hours or that you can always run a few more miles on another day if you come up short some day ought to help reduce the stress.

RE: Sponsors – Have you checked with KLR? You could point out that they might not want a repeat of the Long Way Round situation where they refused to sponsor Macgregor & Boorman ’cause they were afraid they wouldn’t finish. Instead, BMW got all the press from the achievement and the BMW GS is still the bike people associate with round the world adventuring…not a KLR. This is their chance to redeem themselves.

RE: Fundraising in general – Have you thought of 50K/50Day sponsors who would ride with you? Perhaps get Mike Kneebone & the IBA to create a special SaddleSore or SS2K award for riders who join you. The rider pays your expenses or some donation you decide on and gets to ride with you on a 1,000 mile day. They get a nifty neato special SS certificate and you take care of some expenses (and have the added security of knowing someone is riding with you in case your MS flares up and you need a bit of help).
