A Crash Course in Southern Hospitality 

The odds of crushing my motorcycle’s exhaust header into a pancake, destroying the engine sump guard, ripping off the oil filter, having 4 quarts of oil spew onto both wheels at high speed and living to tell about it are fairly slim, so apparently someone was looking out for me on a cold and rainy afternoon this past February. 

I was heading south on I-95 to speak at my first program of the year, a luncheon for MS patients in North Carolina. Because of an eight inch snow storm that was blowing into New Hampshire, I needed to leave two days earlier than I normally would have. I warmed up the home generator, filled all the five gallon jugs with gas and made sure the snow blower was all set to go. It was the least I could do for my wife, as once again I would be 1000 miles away and somewhere sunny when the winter cleanup was being tackled. I did feel a twinge of guilt for about a second, or at least until I rounded the first corner down the block. 

It was cold. I was riding with all my heated clothing plugged in, head to toe, drawing large amounts of amperage from my alternator as the temperature stayed below freezing for the first 8 hours. I spent the first night at my brother house in Virginia, hoping the weather would get a bit warmer the next day. I decided to spend the first extra day I had riding to Florida as there was a harsh and heavy rain forecasted for my second choice route, the Blue Ridge Mountains. It was in the low thirties when I left Virginia the next day and rained as I headed south. I continued wearing my heated gear. It rained on and off a bit all day, the temperatures rose to a respectable 45 degrees and I made good time for not being in a hurry. I chose the Florida state line as my goal for dinner.

Riding through Florence South Carolina, I sped up to pass a tractor trailer who’s spray momentarily blinding me. The bang of two solids colliding was instant, followed by a crunching and sudden increase in altitude.  I never really saw what the large object in the passing lane was, but it catapulted me into the stratosphere, and for a rare instant, a truck driver and a motorcyclist saw eye to eye. Neither of us blinked. 

When the bike and I landed back on earth, I realized I had run over something large and hard and both ends of my bike were misbehaving as if I had two loose wheels. I’m still not sure how I stayed upright. I assumed I had damaged both rims and possibly riding on two flat tires. The bike’s engine was not responding to the throttle well, and I thought the jolt may have knocked some connectors loose. Taking care not to make any sudden actions that would upset the gyroscopic forces, I let the bike slow itself down enough to get to the side of the highway. The realization of trying to patch two tires or waiting hours for a flatbed in the pouring rain on the cusp of freeway traffic compelled me to continue rolling as far as I could, hopefully making the next exit, which was in sight. The bike was wiggling at both ends and I held the bars loosely, but my ass cheeks were holding on for dear life. I was relieved to see a hotel entrance just across from the bottom of the off ramp. My feet were unable to stay planted on the foot pegs, which told me I also had an oil leak. The Yamaha stalled as I pulled in the clutch but we were able to roll into a parking spot. We marked our location with a beautiful pastel of oil and water.

 

As I looked over the damage, I was shocked but grateful, realizing I probably just had my closest call with a bad accident in decades. The front of the engine had been smashed in as if hit with an aluminum baseball bat. The oil filter was awol. Torn right off the motor, it had spurted pressurized oil like an aorta towards the front wheel and collaterally washing down the underbelly and rear wheel with black blood as well.  The bottom of the Super Tenere motor is protected by a plastic belly pan which was now hanging by a tendon, ripped apart and destroyed.

The front mud guard was torn away and the rear of the front fender was cracked at the mounting bolt.

 

My left lower Denali driving light and one of the crash bars were also damaged. The worst of the damage seemed to be the exhaust header, which was bashed in flat and twisted.

 

Whatever I had hit, had gotten slammed hard between the front wheel and the motor, twisted as I rolled over it and flung out towards the right side. A wheel? A ladder? A bicycle, A plow? I will never know.

I called a  friend who works for Yamaha and lives near Atlanta for some help. If I were to make my speaking gig, I needed parts, a dealer who could help, a loaner bike or God forbid, a rental car. I then called my wife to tell her I had hit something but I was ok, trying to organize repairs or a ride.

Within ten minutes of hanging up with Steve, he called me back letting me know a nearby dealer would be by with a trailer to pick my bike up within the hour. He also asked me what parts I thought I needed. From what I could see, the oil filter and a header pipe was all that were crucial to get me back on the road. 

I used some of my hotel rewards points and booked myself a room for the night. I apologized for the oil slick surrounding my bike. I had just gotten to my room and begun removing my wet layers when my cell rang.

“Hello Paul, this is Don from Generation 3 Powersports, I’m out here in the parking lot to collect your your bike.”

 Wow. Barely ten minutes had passed since hanging up with my friend Steve.

 

 

I never know what to expect in these sort of situations, I am completely at the mercy of people I do not know to help me and I have no other options available. Im not one to ever have service done on my bikes so any dealer visit is a unfamiliar experience.  I knew I was vulnerable and stuck agreeing to pay for whatever they choose to charge me. This incident could very well cost me thousands of dollars, money I certainly did not have, just to get back on the road. It’s a scary place to be in, consoled only by the fact that I was, well, alive. I rubbed my credit card as my conscience whispered in my head that I was about to get a ride directly to the cleaners. 

Don was the owner of the dealership, representing the second of the Generation 3 name. He was very interested in my story and my goal of a million miles. Thirty seconds of conversation and I realized my fears were unjustified and flat out wrong. When he said they would do everything they could to get me patched up and back on the road, he truly meant it. 

 

My cell rang again and it was my Yamaha friend with the news that he had located the only exhaust header available in the entire country. Steve had made arrangements to have it shipped overnight to the dealer, and even better, that Yamaha would be donating the part and shipping costs. “The oil filter,” He said, “Well, you will have to find one of those on your own.” Again, my fears were squashed and replaced with guilt of not trusting the goodness of others. The phone call probably saved me a grand. The remaining repairs and trailer ride would certainly be less, and manageable.  Having two extra days on this trip was something that never happens, and it looked like I might even be able to make it to my talk on my own bike after all.

 

We unloaded the bike and rolled it into the shop. A couple of the mechanics showed interest in the bike and we chatted about how many miles I had ridden it last year. One of the guys took a good look and agreed the header pipe and oil filter were crucial, and we decided to patch the fender for the time being. The owner gave me a ride back the hotel after work and even invited me to attend church with his family. I declined, as I needed a shower and some moments to absorb all that had happened. And maybe a shot of whiskey. 

We didn’t know what time of day the part from Yamaha would arrive, so I decided to take a lazy morning and Ubered over to the dealer around noon the next day. The young lady who picked me up started to talk about her life and challenges she was facing, and I briefly told her about my journey and things that had really helped me. Something seemed to click. She thanked me over and over for inspiring her to make a change in her life.  Leaving her car, I was humbled beyond words considering it was only a three mile drive. 

Getting out of the car, I saw the mechanic pull around the lot, on my bike! The exhaust system had arrived, had been installed and the bike was rolling! Wow. All in less than 22 hours! They refused to let me leave without giving it a good wash first and Don asked me to join him and his wife for lunch. I hardly ate, as listening to their story of 40 years in the motorcycle business and their involvement in the community was amazing. They listened to my story as well, about MS, and we discussed the current issues facing the motorcycle industry. 

They refused to let me pay for lunch, and when I returned to say goodbye and collect my motorcycle, they refused to let me pay a single dime for any of the parts, service or even the emergency trailer ride. None of it.

I had the guys who worked on the bike sign my fender, slapped a Generations 3 Motorsports decal on the bike and we all shook hands. The staff took a photo of me and the bike in front of the store and then returned to their daily business activities as if it were just another day for them. 

 

I was a bit overcome and embarrassed by my initial fears of being exploited, financially burned or taken to the cleaners. Purely by accident, I was able to meet some incredibly decent people who just wanted to help me out when I needed it the most. I rode away choked up, grateful my near miss with death had turned out to be another amazing lesson along my journey, about the kindness and compassion of strangers.

 

I was able to pay it forward in a small way the very next day, as traffic slowly inched past a fresh accident in Durham, North Carolina. The van was smoking, smashed up in the front, facing the wrong direction halfway in the passing lane and pressed against the jersey barriers. As I passed, I saw a woman propped against the barrier just behind the wrecked van. The police were not on scene yet and surprisingly for the amount of afternoon commuter traffic, not a single driver had stopped to help her. 

Pulling over was mechanical for me, I never gave it a second thought. I’m not trained in medical response but I could tell she was a bit shaken and scared. She kept repeating where she was to the 911 operator and that another vehicle had hit her. The traffic made it loud and because English was not her first language, she was clearly struggling. I understood the answers she kept repeating, but the operator did not. I motioned for her to give me her phone and I took over the call. After hanging up, I just tried to show compassion. She had a bump on the head and sore legs and arms from the airbag. She kept trying to get up and look over the van but I encouraged her stay put. I calmed her down a bit and kept telling her it was going to be ok. 

It was another ten minutes before rescue arrived and when they began to assess her condition, I spoke to a Trooper and quietly departed the scene. It wasn’t anything more than doing the right thing, but boy did it make me feel good to show a little compassion to a stranger when they needed it. It also made me sad to realize how often I am too busy in life to do so. 

The keyboard brandishing evils of this world are trying to turn us against each other with fear, distrust, hate and bullying, hoping to destroy our country. It’s not real. Stop watching the media feeds and you can lower your cholesterol and blood pressure while losing the fear and distrust of others. Ordinary people are often extraordinary, if we just take the time to notice.

 

 

I started this million mile journey because I felt I had a limited time and a progressive disabling disease, but I am experiencing so much more about the true goodness of people around the world and it has been an incredibly positive adventure. I challenge you, no matter what obstacles you face in your life, to unplug and take a trip, take chances, learn the truth about the people of our world and mostly, #DARE to CARE!

Should I change my Latitude?

Our New Hampshire winter started off pretty darn cold. December’s temperature never went above freezing and the first snow fall is still on the ground, way at the bottom. Living in New England makes riding motorcycles a slightly unintelligent choice for year round transportation.

 

Last year, I found myself on one of New Hampshire’s scenic byways right before a freak snow storm hit. I survived to tell about it, and even better, I had the GoPro running. You think I would’ve learned my lesson.

A couple months ago I got a call from META magazine wanting to run a feature piece on my million mile journey. The editor wanted to set up a date for me to meet with a local photographer on my side of the country.

The plan was to take photos in a Vermont studio for half a day and then spend a few hours being followed by a van of photographers with cameras riding down the road; in my element. A ten page story was a big deal and was sure to bring me lots of much needed exposure.

 

 

We settled on a Wednesday shoot as I was leaving the following day to ride down to Orlando for a presentation. I watched the weather carefully, and besides the temperature being in the teens, the meteorologists never made any mention of snow. Which was great because motorcycles are not supposed to be riding in the snow.

 

 

It has become frightfully clear to me that all the data we are storing in the cloud these days is really wreaking havoc on our weather forecasters. Just a few hours into my ride to Burlington, it started to snow. It was freezing cold, and now it was slippery. I tried to get off the highway at one point but the bike just slid sideways and somehow managed to stay upright. I decided to try to chance making it off the next available ramp.

 

The next exit was partially clear and I made it. I turned off the ramp and made a slow right turn directly into a gas station. I parked under the fuel pump awning and cried Uncle. I phoned the photographer and asked if he could drive the remaining 10 miles or so to come pick me up.

 

 

There was quite a bit of  ice, so it took three of us to walk my bike to a parking space in front of the Dunkin Donuts. I grabbed my gear off the bike and abandoned it for later in the day.

 

 

The photo shoot was pretty laid back, no hair or makeup artist, and I didn’t even check myself in the mirror before we started. We did a video for the website, talked about my mission to ride a million mies for Multiple Sclerosis and my journey so far.

By the time we stopped for lunch and went back to retrieve my bike, the temperature had risen to 25, the sun was out and the salted roads were starting to dissolve the ice.

I rode over a few miles of winding roads, with the camera crew in tow. We continually stopped and turned around to do it all again. Take one, take two, take three. By the mid-afternoon we had finished all the road shots, shook hands and I headed south, to Orlando to speak at a Multiple Sclerosis patient event.

Although I try to stay away from snow and ice, I often find myself having to ride in extreme cold. Having the proper gear makes all the difference!  When the temperature is only 15 degrees and you are moving at 70mph, it can feel more like 20 below. Warm but thin base layers are important and I also rely on a heated jacket liner and heated gloves to keep me warm all year. My outer jacket is from a company called Aerostich and is made from high quality waxed cotton to keep it waterproof.

 

 

My new TCX boots are lined with Gore-Tex and are completely waterproof as well.

 

I have a pair of leather Gortex gloves that were customized by Ken of Phenix Flaming Heat. He can take any gloves and add carbon wiring to make the glove heated. My new HJC RPHA MAX helmet has a special shield insert that prevents the frost and fog from blocking my view.

 

 

A neck warmer, thick wool socks and long underwear are always found underneath anytime the temperatures are expected to be chilly.

Having the right cold weather riding gear is not just for comfort, it will save me from getting frost bite, or worse, freezing to death!

When I think about moving south, I remember how bad the heat affects my MS symptoms and soon realize I’d much rather keep dealing with the cold winters!

The afternoon security guard rounded the corner with his elbow cocked, hand hovering over the holster of his two-way radio.

I giggled like a preschooler, knowing my DNA was probably on every single nut and bolt of the crusted sculpture.

“It’s ok, we have been quite intimate.”

Slowly and carefully I slid my cellphone out of my rear pocket, adding,

“Look, I even have photos of this bike stripped-down and naked.” 

MOTOART

Brilliant paintings, sculptures, and significant historic or rare artifacts all deserve their place in museums. Art galleries are open for people to learn and appreciate the stories, history or beauty of the pieces.

 

When I first learned that the world’s largest motorcycle museum had heard about my million mile journey and expressed interest in putting my Yamaha Super Tenere on display in their facility, I thought it was a prank.

 

 

The Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum is the premiere showcase of rare and significant motorcycles from all over the world. They have one of a kind pieces and 4 floors of bikes on display, each and every bike in restored and running condition. Well, that is until they rolled my bike onto the floor! Of the 1500 motorcycles on display, mine is unique in that is is filthy, beat up and not running. It joins a handful of other machines on display not because of what it was, but because of where it went and why.

 

About a year ago, as the bike was getting tired and about to be replaced, I joked a few times that it should be put in a museum. Steve Liberatore has been a big supporter of mine and happens to work for Yamaha Motor USA. He asked me one day if I was serious, and that he thought the bike really should be put somewhere where everybody could see it. He offered to speak to the folks at Barber and get back to me. I didn’t expect much, but within a few months the museum said they were indeed interested in having my well used motorcycle on display.

 

I still did not really think they were serious, and expected them to look at the condition of it and all the junk I had bolted on it to help me ride long distances and roll it into the nearby woods. (Barber Motorsports Park sits on 600 incredible acres.)

 

 

The dead bike sat in my friend Kerri’s garage in Salt Lake City since the day after my world record, and after a month or so of waiting to see where it was going, I had it shipped to my house. When I received word that the museum wanted it, I contacted the shipping company, HAULBIKES to see if they could help me out a little with the cost of shipping it again, only this time to Birmingham Alabama. They were more than accommodating and after hearing my story, agreed to ship my bike for free!

 

 

The day the big blue truck arrived to pick up my dirty dripping nasty beat up bike, the driver gently handled it with kid gloves and for the first time, I started to understand what others could see in this particular Yamaha. The value was in the history. It’s incredible mileage in such a short period of time, the cities, towns and states it rode through, the adventures it starred in, and the journey we shared together while chasing the cure for Multiple Sclerosis.

 

 

The bike was picked up in March, and I did not hear a peep from the museum. I did not publicly post anything on social media about where the bike was headed, mostly because I still didn’t believe they were actually going to put it up on a pedestal along side world famous and rare machines that truly were motorcycle art.

 

 

In August, I had an encouraging meeting in Los Angeles with Yamaha executives about helping promote my journey. While riding home the very next day, I received more exciting news. Denis McCarthy, one of the employees at the museum, posted a video to my Facebook timeline. I was riding I-40 in Texas when I was forced to pull over, my eyes were filled with tears and I couldn’t wait to share the news with Elin and then the entire world.

The video showed my bike, set up on a large platform, majestic, towering and proud of it’s place amongst famous Yamaha race bikes from the last 50 years. They didn’t wash it, they didn’t remove any of my accessories, not even my Thermos, but put it on display just as it was ridden every day of it’s short three and a half year, but incredible 172,0000 mile adventure.

 

My 2012 Yamaha Super Tenere had indeed officially become MOTOART.

 

 

When I was booked to deliver a talk in Mississippi in September, I knew I had to stop into Birmingham to visit CURECHASER. The day I arrived I was given the VIP treatment, a tour around the incredible race track and facilities, as well as a personalized tour of the museum.

 

 

They were still working on my display as I arrived, hanging my photos on a wall behind my bike and explained they were also going to have a running video sharing my journey updates as I continue to reach my goal.

 

 

I was overwhelmed again, and could not really express my gratitude for the exposure this exhibit will bring my story, my journey and quite possibly a cure for the disease that is slowly rotting away my brain and others living with Multiple Sclerosis.

Before I left, I went upstairs alone one last time to say goodbye to the faithful friend I had shared so many hours, weeks and months traveling across the country on.

 

 

I enthusiastically shared the bike’s history with that afternoon security guard, starting to grasp that my five years of hard work and sacrifice is paying off. My million mile motorcycle journey is definitely raising awareness!

 

 

 

Although the first and original Yamaha CURECHASER has been retired, it can never be forgotten, as it is available for the entire world to learn it’s historic significance in my million mile journey to cure Multiple Sclerosis.
